To Plato, Art was imitation of nature

But in century 19th, photography took over that function. Abstract Art, in the 20th, overturned the entire conception that Art was about representation. And although Art meant skills early on, conceptual artists elevated ideas over execution. So what’s Art? Does it have to be beautiful necessarily? Original? Expressive? Intellectual? Uplifting? Here is how several artists answered the question “What is art?”

Etymology: The word “Art” is related to the Latin term “ars” meaning, Art, craft or skill. The first known use of the word Art comes from a 13th-century manuscript. However, the word Art and its several variants (artemeart, etc.) have been probably existing since the founding of Rome.
